How to Prevent Weight Loss Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a problem encountered by a lot of people at one stage or another in their lifetime. They are particularly common amongst teenage girls after puberty and women during pregnancy; however males can also suffer from them during weight gain or training. They develop when the body grows at a rapid rate and the skin can’t keep up, causing the tissues under the skin to tear. This occurs because the fibers in the tissues become dehydrated and rip. Because stretch marks are caused by the dehydration of the skin the best preventative measure to take is to moisturize.

There are a number of different products on the marked aimed at preventing or reducing the appearance of stretch marks, however the most common and perhaps the best are products containing cocoa butter. The properties found in this helps keep skin moisturized and can prevent tearing. However any product high in antioxidants will do the same to the skin, as antioxidants are essential for protection and repair of the body’s skin and cells. Vitamin E is also important in preventing stretch marks, and it is a good idea to add some Vitamin E oil to bath water to smooth and moisturize the skin. It may also to be a good idea to use skin oil once a week as this aids elasticity, increasing the skins ability to stretch easily. Preparing your skin in this way is the easiest way to help prevent weight loss stretch marks.

As well as keeping the skin moisturized and hydrated, it is important to try to do the same to the skins deep tissue. One good method that is common, especially amongst women, is to deep condition a problem area at night by moisturizing with a suitable cream, and then wrapping in or lying on a warm damp towel. This helps the skin absorb the nutrients from the cream, getting deep into the skins tissues. Exfoliating weekly will also help as it removes the skins top, deep layers, revealing new skin and making it easier for the creams and oils to be absorbed. For those that already have stretch marks, although they may fade over time, there are additional steps that can be taken to reduce the appearance of scars. Collagen producing or skin-firming lotions help to ease the scars from existing stretch marks as well as reducing the risk of new ones appearing, and is most effective if used twice a day on problem areas. There is also the more extreme option of Retin-A or laser treatment that can remove existing stretch marks.

The best way to prevent stretch marks from weight loss is to keep skin well moisturized. By getting into a daily routine of applying creams or oils to the skin the skin will be kept hydrated, preventing tears form appearing after weight loss. Even if you do not have a problem with stretch marks it may be a good idea to keep skin moisturized anyway to help prevent the chances of it happening in the future.
